What to look for in a safe?

Picking the right safe can be a daunting task and require hours and hours of research to ensure you are getting the right product that best fits your needs. There are tons of different gun safes for sale out there. I’m hoping by the end of these next few paragraphs that you’ll hopefully have a much better understanding on what you should be looking for and the different options available to you. We’ll touch on things like fire protection, capacity, lock types, strength and of course cosmetics. Buying a safe is supposed to be fun and exciting so don’t get overwhelmed!

Fireproof

When a basic wood and glass gun cabinet is exposed to fire, you’ve only got but a few seconds before your entire collection goes up in flames. Replacing all of your items as well as your cabinet will most likely be several times the cost of a quality gun safe. If you’re like me, it’s not even about the money; it’s about the bond and memories I have with my firearms. I wouldn’t think about getting anything but a fireproof gun safe. Fire protection is a key feature I look for when going to purchase a gun safe and you’ll find that different safes have different fire ratings. These fire ratings can be anywhere from 30mins to 2.5 hours. Here are some of the key questions to ask yourself when deciding how much fire protection you actually need! How far do you live away from the fire department? Where in your home will you be storing your safe? Will it be up against cement or wood walls? How easy is it to access in the event of a fire? What is the value of items you are protecting? Once you’ve determined the amount of fire protection you need, lets move on.

Capacity

Another important feature to consider when picking out the right safe is capacity. It is so important that you take the time to consider everything and anything you may want to store in your new gun safe. What I find to be the best method in picking out the right capacity is to actually physically lay out everything that you want to store in your new safe. They are now considered to be a stylish piece of furniture that can easily bring personality to any space such as a living room, game room and even an office. If you are anything like me, you don’t want one of those used, cheap gun safes you see at Wal-Mart. You want something you can be proud of. Gun Safes also come in a variety of colors and finishes to match wherever you decide to place it. In addition, the locks and handles can also come in a variety of finished like brushed aluminum, gold, bronze, chrome, etc.

Bottom Line

If you still can’t quite make up your mind, don’t go out to the nearest gun safe sale and pick the cheapest one. Here’s a short summary of what I would look go for in a gun safe for sale.

I would definitely need the safe to have a minimum of a 60-minute fire rating. I live pretty close to the fire department, but the safe would be situated next to wood stud walls and would be sitting on an oak floor that is far from fire resistant.

As far as size and capacity goes, like I said in earlier paragraphs, it’s extremely important to purchase a safe that you can eventually grow into and not max out within a year. Safes are very heavy and very hard to move, especially up and down stairs, so you want to make sure that you pick one that you are not going to have to replace as soon as you get that new gun that you’ve been eyeing for Christmas. I would spring for something that has the ability to store 18 guns or more.

Another important feature that is an absolute must-have when purchasing a new gun safe is a dehumidifier. Without a dehumidifier your guns will be prone to rust, corrosion, mold and mildew. This will not only ruin your guns cosmetically but can also ruin the internal metal parts in your guns. If you’re planning on storing other things in your gun safe like pictures and documents, a gun safe dehumidifier is a must.

When it comes to choosing a lock type, I would prefer the digital combination style lock. For me, it would be the easiest way for me to remember the combination and allows for a quick entry. I don’t like the thought of having to worry about a key.
